About PISA and TIMSS

What is PISA?

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students.

In 2022 , around 690,000 15-year-olds in 81 countries and economies, took the internationally agreed two-hour test. Students were assessed in science, mathematics, reading, collaborative problem solving and financial literacy.

What is TIMSS?

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is organized by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and conducted every four years since 1995. This international study is a valuable tool to measure student achievement and monitor international trends in the mathematics and science at the 4th grade (equivalent to P4 in Hong Kong) and 8th grade (equivalent to S2 in Hong Kong) under different educational systems in different countries / regions all over the world.

TIMSS data have enabled countries around the world to monitor the effectiveness of their educational systems in a global context and make evidence-based decisions to improve educational policies related to mathematics and science.  As this is a quasi-longitudinal design, with the 4th grade cohort assessed four years later at the 8th grade, this enables TIMSS to provide information about trends in educational achievement across time and across grades within a particular assessment.
